Harun al-Rashid

Abbasid caliph (qq.v.) from 789-809, during whose reign the Baghdad (q.v.) caliphate reached the height of its glory. Harun al-Rashid was famous for his cultivated court and for the success of his expeditions into Byzantine Asia Minor (q.v.). In 798 his troops reached Ephesus (q.v.), and in 803 he captured Tyana and Herakleia (qq.v.). Harun cultivated Charlemagne (q.v.), that other great leader of the opening years of the ninth century, as a possible ally against the Umayyads of Spain (qq.v.).
